Yes, yes, I actually DO paint furniture in my kitchen... :-) I told my hubbs that EVERY ONE'S garage is tooooo full for projects. :-)
Me thinks he's not believing me.
So, here's the long and gory china cupboard story.
I bought this little beauty about two years ago. It's been stored in my daughter's garage.... 'member what I said about full garages?.... because I was really dreading getting down to business on it. It's mahogany (more on that later) and was painted with white enamel (with no primer) over the top of the original finish. It was chippy and peelie.... just like everyone in Bloggieville loves, right? Yeah, not so much. It was PEELING... like the whole side was almost gone and it was bubbled up and horrible looking.
After spending hours and hours and HOURS stripping this little piece of loveliness it was finally ready for the paint.
So I spent the big dollars and bought Chalk Paint. I've never spent forty dollars for a quart of paint before.......EVAH.....
My darling daughter was doing a little vintage cabinet at the same time so she was the first one to stick her toe in the water and give this new paint a shot. I wasn't really impressed..... I'm sorry. I didn't think it was all that wonderful, so I opted to get that darn paint color-matched with Behr Premium... LOVE the color..... a delish creamy white.... perfect for my little cottage kitchen.
I also bought BIN primer-sealer and applied that first. Yep, back to the mahogany. That blasted pink bled right through. No problem, I thought, that great Behr paint has undercoat, that'll take care of it. No such luck.
I thought I'd better get out the primer with shellac.... I've NEVER had this happen before, but the can sounded like a gun shot when I opened it.... took about ten years off my life......and it was all yukky inside.
Now, I live in a sweet little community, but it has no Lowe's.... No Home Depot.... and no grocery store either, for that matter......so I got myself ready and headed out to the freeway to go to Home Depot to get some more primer. The freeway was backed up to Alaska.
I went home.
I got out my huge can of black paint and got down to business. No pink bled through, that's for sure, but it's really not what I wanted.
Which means another cupboard will need to be painted... or my kitchen is going to be too dark.
Isn't that how it works? One thing leads to another?
Dang, I'm sooooo frustrated.
Hoping to finish it today. And, although it's not even cured yet, I'll jam in full of pretties and then I'll share it with you.
Oh, and by the way, it does have doors and drawers, but I never remember to take pictures of the "befores".... :-)
(Little pieces of leftover carpet, turned upside down, make great pads to make moving furniture really easy. Believe me.. That little cupboard's been spun around countless times.)
Totally off topic.... but this is RANDOM, right???
Note to self: Let the glue gun cool before you put it back in the box with the glue sticks.
:-)
I am sort of impatient.
And, to top it all off I need a new bathroom sink. The darn drain was plugged.... yes, it probably WAS because I take my make-up off with Vasoline. Don't tell Estee Lauder... but I've been doing it for years.
Tried bleach. Nope, that didn't work.
Tried drain cleaner. Nope.
AHA!!!!.... I went online and found an EXPERT who said to pour boiling water down the drain.
Yep, the drain IS clear.
The sink? Broken.
Let me tell 'ya... when the sink breaks? It's REALLY loud.
So now I'm thinking I should tell you a story with a happy ending.
Like this post isn't already long enough?
First the horrible part.........my daughter went to pick my grandson up at school yesterday.
She watched a truck pull into the parking lot coming very close to a little two year old boy..... she started screaming for him to stop.........he didn't.........he RAN OVER that little baby.
My daughter called last night to say they were releasing him from the hospital.
He had a broken finger.
Isn't GOD good? Isn't that amazing?
My girl went right over to her sweet friend's house and they began to pray for him.... Then Kate called others to begin to pray.
There is power in prayer.
We are so grateful.
Thank you God for this miracle.
With lovies and huggies too....
Spencer
WOW, sugar, you're leading a very exciting life at the moment!!! Prayer definitely works but that driver should be fined for going so fast.
ReplyDeleteEven the best laid plans can go awry. Trust me, I KNOW~
XOXO,
Connie
Oh yes, I too believe in the power of prayer!! Can't wait to see the china cabinet all finsihes & full of goodies!!
ReplyDeleteHave a Great Weekend!!

My goodness Spencer, sounds like that cabinet took you for a ride! It can be very frustrating when you are anxious to do a project and you get thrown curve balls. I often forget to take the before pictures too. I hope you have better luck with your next project and how amazing about that little boy!
ReplyDeleteSpencer it seems like most all my projects turn out like your cabinet episode. You always think it will be so easy.....
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing your experience with chalk paint- I am not getting the big price tag and last week there was a post someone did on making your own chalk paint which sounded very easy.
God is so good protecting that little one!
bee blessed

Well, that post WAS full of randomness, just like I like it!! You are the first person to tell the world that you are not a big chalk paint fan...I'm still on the fence. I don't want to do all the prep but I don't want to spend the money...yeah.
ReplyDeleteSo glad to see a happy ending. God is good.
Connie, he wasn't going fast, just was coming up a slight incline in a Tahoe. He couldn't see the little guy. Mom didn't have hold of his hand. :( It was horrible! I am so traumatized! :(
ReplyDeleteHe had TIRE MARKS on his face! BOTH front and rear tires drove over him and a Broken finger? God is AMAZING! :)
Your experience with your hutch is one reason I put off big projects like that. I've been wanting to refinish my kitchen cabinets but have put it off for ages now thinking I migt ruin them.
ReplyDeleteYou must be so totally frustrated with the entire painting process now, Spencer! Sorry to hear that you had such a bad experience with the ASCP. I've used it but am going to be experimenting with a new "recipe" for creating my own chalk paint. Happy to hear the joyous outcome of that little boy. He had a guardian angel looking out for him, didn't he? Please stop by to enter my give-away- it's a gift card for Lowe's. If you win, try to pick a day when the traffic isn't backed up all the way to Alaska! LOL
ReplyDeletehugs, Sue
What an ordeal with the cupboard Spencer. I know it will still be beautiful though.
ReplyDeleteI'm so, so glad the little boy was okay. Yes prayer is the answer.
hugs to you...
Whoa.. it's been quite a week at your place. I can relate :)
ReplyDeleteHope the cabinet turns out the way that you want it to. I am impatient too, and need to learn how to have more patience, especially with projects around the house.
I am so glad that the little one wasn't seriously injured. How scary.
Hope that this is a great week for you.
p.s. I take my make-up off with vasoline too :)
Geesh Spencer I'm pooped just reading all you went through with this cupboard....I would have found the closet Ikea and just bought a new one....Surely there is an Ikea within 500 miles of your cottage....LOL
ReplyDeleteI like to paint in the Kitchen too... much cooler here in S. TX!!
ReplyDeleteblessings. Dixie
Spencer, the cabinet is trying your patience. I am one of the ten bloggers in the universe who seldom paints furniture. Whenever I have some really hot cooking liquid in the kitchen that is not needed I pour it down the sink to help degrease it. Thank God the child is okay and prayer works. hugs♥O
ReplyDeleteI must say you should write a book. You have such a way with words. I'm so thankful the little guy is ok. You have certainly had a week with the broken sink and the cabinet that is just being a stinker. A friend of mine told me to pour straight bleach down a slow running sink, let it soak and then hot hot water.. so far that has worked for me.. thankfully no broken sinks. I'm looking forward to seeing the finished cabinet I'm sure it's gorgous. hugs ~lynne~
ReplyDeleteHi darlin, I hope this isn't a repeat comment. For some reason it isn't telling me my comment was taken or has to be approved.. You certainly have a way with words, You should write a book. What a week you've had, the cabinet is trying your patience, can't wait to see it I know it's going to be beautiful. I'm sorry about the sink.. Thank goodness the little guy is ok.. hugs ~lynne~
ReplyDeleteHi darling, going to try this again, for some reason it won't let me leave comments...third times the charm.. you have such a way with words. I hope the cabinet doens't get the best of you. Thank goodness the little guy is ok.. hugs ~lynne~
ReplyDeleteHi darling, if nothing else I am determined to leave a message, I'm sorry to hear the cabinet has been dealing you fits, I know you're going to make it gorgeous, can't wait for the reveal.. thank goodness the little guy is ok... I really hope this message goes through.. tried to find your email and don't have that either... hugs ~lynne~
ReplyDeleteOh my...thank goodness that little boy is okay! Can't wait to see your hutch!
ReplyDeleteOh wow, many things in one post...I stressed , I laughed, I worried, then I rejoiced!!
ReplyDeleteHate that you are not pleased with your project and that you need a new sink...was a little worried that you take your make up off with vasoline untill you said you have done it for years.... breathed a sigh of relief when I found out the baby only has a broken finger!!
I am emotionally worn out now..time for a nap!LOL
Praise God! What a wonderful outcome Spencer!!
ReplyDeleteLoved your randomness today - made us smile, sigh & thank God for his goodness...do enjoy your day!!
