I just finished reading The Shack......hmmm......I have to say I didn't enjoy it. I know, I should have put it down, but I NEVER give up on a book, and I've read some pretty lousy ones. I actually finished Lovely Bones because I am so determined to finish a book. I believe God is to be glorified. I stand in AWE of Him! And, very, very grateful. God is portrayed as a woman in this book and the sort of gal you'd want to high 5. I felt like it was disrespectful. Just not my cup of tea.

Did you read it? What did you think?? Did you enjoy it? What did you take away from the book? What did I miss??

I'd love to hear what you thought.

Warmly,
Spencer

  1. Hi Spencer. Thanks for coming to visit me yesterday! I tried to read The Shack but only got about 3/4 of the way through. Many people told me it was life changing and I just wasn't making that connection. I just put it away. I've wondered if I should go back to it but then I think, "Nah".

  2. Spencer, since I didn't see an email address from you this is the only way I can reply to your question about the roses. It is in my garden and since I planted it I should know the same but alas, chickee, I don't. I DO know it is a David Austin rose bush and if I can find the tag that I usually save for all my roses I'll let you know, honey. Try googling David Austin and I'm sure this rose will be in there. However, I purchased it at Greenhurst Nursery which is featured in lenght on my blog but back a little ways. It's a fantastic nursery. Thanks for visiting and commenting. I appreciate each and every one, girlfriend.

  4. I had heard everyone talking about the Shack...but I'm like you...it felt disrespectful ...I had to make myself read it and finally stopped 3/4 ways thru. Other people said they couldn't put it down!
The things they explained about grace, etc. were all true...just a strange way to go about telling it.

  5. I know this is an old post (I can't help that I just discovered your wonderful blog, and I've spent the whole evening reading your postings and drooling over your pictures!), but I just had to join in on the Shack conversation. I have to admit that I loved the book but that's probably because I didn't see the portrayal of Papa-God as a woman as disrespectful. Instead, since the protagonist had suffered horrible abuse at the hand of his father and, therefore, had a difficult time relating to God as "Father," I saw Papa-God's meeting him in the form of a motherly figure as a picture of Papa-God's incredible, deep love for His children and His willingness to reach out to us in a way that enables us to recognize Him for Who He is. Isn't that what He did with His Son? Weren't there those who would've said that depicting God as a baby born to an unmarried teenager who was engaged to a blue collar worker who could only manage to provide a stable for her to give birth in? God in an infant, human body? A baby Who would take His first nap in a manger where animals ate? A baby Who would soil Himself just like every other human baby on the planet? Doesn't really make sense to us humans, does it? But that's what Papa-God did for us . . . He came to us as a human so that we might have a relationship with Him! Is that so very different from what happens in The Shack? Just food for thought, sweet sista. : )
